It is an experiment to determine the breaking energy of the material against dynamic loads. After the notch impact test sample is broken, the fracture surface can be examined and an idea about the fracture type can be obtained. These types of fractures are ductile fracture, brittle fracture, etc. It can be in different ways.
The breaking energy is calculated in joules and this value varies according to the sample size and test temperature. In our laboratory, the mentioned test can be performed with the INSTRON 450 Joule Motorized Impact device between +10 and -80 degrees Celsius.
